Incredibly Rare Gas Recall Issued By BP

By Cornelius Nunev

BP has publicized a fuel recall for the states of Indiana and Illinois. A tank of fuel was polluted before it was parts of those states. Though they are significant, a fuel recall is a rare thing.

Recalling BP fuel

The oil spill was evidently not enough, as the world's least favorite gasoline business is now mucking up people's automobiles. According to AutoBlog, British Petroleum, usually referred to as BP has issued a gasoline recall, for a batch of contaminated gasoline from a British Petroleum refinery in Whiting, Ind. Contaminated gasoline from the facility has gone out to numerous stations in northeast Indiana and northwest Illinois, which has caused some troubles for motorists in that area.

Some vehicles will not start at all while others struggle to do so, ABC Chicago pointed out.

The gasoline in question is believed to be from a single storage tank. It is regular unleaded-grade fuel, according to AutoBlog, and went to a number of distributors, such as Meijer, Thornton's, Luke Oil and Costco. One consumer had a $1,200 repair bill after draining and flushing the fuel lines, cleaning the injectors and replacing the spark plugs.

Fixes not covered by warranties

AutoBlog points out that British Petroleum guarantees fuel. All repairs related to full will be covered by the business. This is great news for people dealing with repairs from contaminated fuel. If you went into a Valpariso Mazda dealer and asked to have your car fixed, it would all be out of pocket because it is not covered under the car's warranty.

Though the gasoline recall is worrying and having an automobile full of gas that will not get the car to work while still making vehicle loans payments on is frustrating, instances of contaminated fuel and subsequent fuel recalls are fairly uncommon.

According to Minnesota Public Radio News, there was a refinery in Minnesota that had to issue a recall for fuel a few years back. There was more than the 10 percent ethanol allowed in the fuel, and this was causing a lot of troubles. There have been some other instances of gas recalls too, such as one in August 2009 in Melbourne, Australia. According to TheMotorReport.com.au, the incident was comparable to the BP gasoline recall with contaminated gasoline.

Not a problem with motor vehicle fuel typically

Gasoline recalls for gasoline or diesel don't occur too often. Most fuel recalls are for fuels other than those used in motor automobiles and those are still uncommon. For instance, one fuel recall was for a gel fuel used in decorative torches and similar devices, according to CBS LA, which was issued in June of this year.

From 2000, there have only been three recalls that involved propane, according to the consumer product safety commission. There is a list of recalls for gasoline and other related products at WeMakeItSafer.com. Fuel recalls are not common in any way.
