Depend On A Vehicle Safety Kit For Improved Auto Safety

By Eric Holm

A flat tire is an inconvenience that nobody wants to have to deal with but chances are good every driver will experience one. With the proper tools and a spare tire, anyone can quickly change the flat and get back on the road. Auto safety depends on preparation and making sure you have everything you need in case of an emergency can mean the difference between a slight inconvenience and a huge problem. Many cars will have a spare tire, usually under a panel inside the trunk. The typical spare tire is slightly smaller than an average car tire and far less durable. It is designed only to get you far enough to find a place where you can purchase a replacement. Getting stranded without a spare is much more complicated because someone will have to deliver a tire to your location or you will have to have the car towed.

Most auto emergency kits will include everything needed to remove a flat tire and replace it with the spare. A lug nut wrench or nut driver is needed to take the lug nuts off and pull the tire off. A durable flashlight with fully charged batteries will be a lifesaver if you get a flat tire after dark.

One common problem is a dead battery. Make sure your car care kit includes a good pair of jumper cables. You may get lucky and have someone stop to offer assistance but you should have your own booster cables, just in case your helper has none. A boost from another vehicle should be enough to get the car started again.

Sometimes the problem can be with the spark plugs. A tester is a handy item to include in an auto emergency kit. In just a few minutes, you can determine if there is a burned out plug. There could be any number of things wrong with a vehicle that breaks down. Having the necessary tools to deal with the problem can be the difference between expensive towing costs and being able to resolve the issue on the spot.

Purchasing or assembling a vehicle safety kit is well worth the investment. A well packaged kit can be conveniently moved into a rental vehicle, so you will always have what you need with you. Other tools to consider putting in your kit are things like screwdrivers, assorted wrenches, a tire repair kit and some basic first aid supplies. Drivers need to be prepared for short trips as well as long distance rides.
