The Fast Rise And Furious Demise Of The Car Tuning Industry With C5 Corvette Parts

By Diane Bell

Discussions on car tuning have been on full throttle in recent years. From its humble beginnings in the Land of the Rising Sun, to countless internet blogs created, and movies made, in honour of the latest advances in this fast-moving, constantly evolving subculture. Where everyones willing to live life a quarter mile at a time with C5 Corvette parts. So, do not blink, or it might all be gone in 60 seconds!

But at the end of 2008, when one of the aftermarket companies, Trust (trading as GReddy in the States), that helped pioneer the whole tuner culture in Japan announced it would be closing its doors for good, it sent a collective chill up the spines of boy-racers solar system wide! If Trust went out of business due to the global financial crisis, then what did that mean for the future of the worldwide automotive enhancement industry.

But it seems the gods of NOS took pity on their loyal subjects, fuel-injecting new life into the underground racing culture in the form of Vin Diesel. Or, maybe it did not exactly play out that way. But despite all evidence of any contrary, the underground racing circuit was, and still is, a massive influence on why Japanese performance vehicles are still in such high demand. But while the vehicular tuner revolution is still in full swing, and probably doing burnouts on your girlfriends lawn right now, it is the financial burden of actually participating in the culture that is got most budding Vin Diesels thinking twice.

In simpler times, one could invest in a simple turbo kit and chip, and that would be enough to leave most road users eating ones proverbial dust. But with the vehicles coming off the production lines these days, it is sometimes necessary to reengineer, (practically) the whole vehicle just to get some semblance of the performance achievable in days gone by.

Should one persevere, the automobiles onboard computer would be the main thing deserving of special attention. Its electronic control unit (ECU) / onboard computer serves to integrate most, if not all, of any electronics incorporated into the vehicles design. So, making any engine enhancements before knowing how to reprogram the ECU might be a recipe for disaster unless ones intention is to actually cross the finish line in a ball of flames.

So especially when deciding to install any turbo or supercharger kits, special consideration must be given to how they might affect the ECUs day-to-day functioning. The ECU needs to be reprogrammed to take any engine enhancements made into proper consideration. Or else it might not be able to properly interpret the significant changes in horsepower it is detecting, leading to malfunctions too numerous to list in one article.

Being capable of greater rates of acceleration than a vehicles been designed for, is bound to place more strain on the smooth functioning of the suspension and braking mechanisms. Which is yet another factor to be taken into consideration when hopping onto the tuner car bandwagon. Of course, the simpler and potentially safer approach to vehicle modification would be to simply start with the exterior.

There is an almost endless variety of purely cosmetic enhancements that one might consider too. From aftermarket tyre rims that are significantly lighter and wider, broadening the tyre, thereby, increasing its overall grip on the road; to a chromed dual-exhaust; window tints; custom spoilers; and body kits. All of which could have a vehicle looking race-track ready in no time even if it still does not handle like it just yet.
